Looking for the perfect partner but don’t know how to conclude if he’s right for you? Kissing might be the solution to your dubious query. A latest study by Oxford University has found that kissing helps people assess the value of potential partners through taste, smell and fitness. As for those who are currently in relationships, the study has also proven that kissing is a definite way of getting your partner to stick around for longer. To further strengthen the authenticity of the results, women who are already in long-term relationships have found to place a higher significance in kissing.

The online survey which was published in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour showed that people who valued kissing more highly were also extra selective when choosing partners. Thus, this goes to show that kissing is extremely fundamental in sizing up potential partners.

Before relationships are courtships which involve a complex series of assessments before the man and woman involved would decide to carry on. Professor Robin Dunbar, from the Department of Experimental Psychology at Oxford University said, “Initial attraction may include facial, body and social cues. Then assessments become more and more intimate as we go deeper into the courtship stages, and this is where kissing comes in.”

Comparing his research to popular author, Jane Austen whose works of romantic fiction includes Pride and Prejudice as well as Sense and Sensibility, Prof Dunbar said that Austen had realized a very significant thing; people were tremendously good at analyzing where they were in the “mating market” and pitching their demands accordingly. To that, Prof Dunbar advises everyone to play the right cards depending on the kind of situation you’ve been tossed into.

When comparing both genders, it is shown that kissing plays a more important role in long-term relationships to women as opposed to men and researchers suggest that this may be due to the fact that kissing helps increase feelings of affection and attachment amongst couples.

There you go, girls. If you’re ballsy enough, skip the long months of courtship to determine if he is The One and just jump right into kissing. What do you think? Share with us your thoughts on the matter!
