One thing we know about love is that it does not (and should not) discriminate age, race, gender and size. Gloria Shuri Nava is overweight, and have been her whole life. Her 22-year-old boyfriend Ali, is “fit and muscular”, according to Gloria in her essay for Yahoo Shine. The 25-year-old half Mexican and half-Filipino YouTube personality and part-time actress has become inspiration for women all over the world, giving them hope that true love exists.
The lovebirds met online in 2009, after Ali moved to California from Scotland to get his PhD in clinical psychology, saw one of Gloria’s videos. Within two years, they were romantic. She always knew he was into big girls as he admitted that most of his exes were chubby. “Some think it’s weird, but it’s like having a thing for blondes: It’s just a preference,” she says.
The couple’s happy together, but some people just can’t seem to accept it. After putting up a “My Boyfriend Does My Makeup Tag” video on YouTube, Gloria was excited to see that her video has gained 260,000 views. But that’s when the hate comments started creeping in.
“Then I read the comments. People think I’m so mean to him, that he’s not really my boyfriend, and that he’s just using me for a green card.
“Just because I’m not what you would call NORMAL, doesn’t mean I’m not allowed to find love, or be with someone who is attractive.
“I would never lie about someone being my boyfriend to make myself feel better”.
Some comments she hears are just downright ignorant like “It’s great he can see past your looks,” or “He’s so nice for being with you”.
Gloria also said that Ali’s support also encouraged her to lose 40 more pounds to feel more confident in her skin. She has ale launched “The Beauty Adjustment”, which focuses o the message that ‘there is no one “normal” way to look or love’.
“Beauty and relationships come in all shapes and sides: brown, yellow, short, tall, thin, fat – and one partner doesn’t have to mirror the other. Love is love. That’s a lesson that Ali taught me, and now I want to teach it to the rest of the world,”she said. (Source)
