Who knew that a hairless sea creature could become the inspiration for a trendy hairstyle?
From butterfly layers to wolf cuts, animal-inspired hairstyles have become a popular thing this year. Now, enter the jellyfish haircut, which is basically a thickly-layered shag. The look is unique and eye-catching in that it’s full on top, with long tresses at the bottom – but the internet is divided about it.

Before you freak out, the hairdo is unrelated to aquatic life, other than the shape’s source of inspiration. If the word seems familiar to you, there’s a strong chance you’re thinking about the Octopus Cut, another fashion trend inspired by sea creatures.
The look isn’t exactly novel, because it was influenced by the “hime” (or princess) cut, which dates back to the Japanese Heian era. The jellyfish cut combines two traditional haircuts: a blunt bob and a mullet. The top layer is bowl-shaped, trimmed shorter and equally all around the head to resemble the shape of the gelatinous sea dweller. The bottom layer is kept extended so that it mimics the tentacles of a jellyfish.
In other words, think of a bald mannequin with a jellyfish on top of it, and imagine giving that a haircut. The distribution of length and weight has a significant impact on the result. The more radical the haircut, the shorter and rounder the crown will be.
Why is it popular?
The hairstyle gained popularity on TikTok, like many other hair trends these days. The jellyfish haircut lets you wear both a short and long hairstyle. You can also experiment with the roughness, shape, and length to make the cut exactly what you want. More people are beginning to notice the edgy trend after Nicole Kidman was recently spotted sporting it on the cover of Perfect Magazine.
Will It Work On Me?
Of course it will! If you need an ocean-sized statement for your hair, then the jellyfish haircut is meant for you.
One of the cool things about this style is that your hairstylist won’t even struggle with layering; just two layers of trimming are required to complete it. All you have to do is make an appointment with your stylist, who can customize the jellyfish haircut for your hair type, hair density, and facial shape. For instance, you can make the top layer sit directly above or directly below your chin, which is a good choice for a rounder facial shape. This will make the bob appear fuller and more defined. To really frame your features, square-faced people might think about keeping the top layers at or slightly below the jawline.
The bottom layer depends on the texture of your hair. The “tentacles” can be rocked long or short, and if you have naturally curly hair, your ends will simply look spectacular in this haircut. To get the perfect jellyfish haircut, bring along some reference images to show to your stylist.
Styling
Just so you know, this stylish hairstyle requires very little upkeep. You don’t need to do much after getting the chop to attract attention. However, if you want to give your hair more substance, pick up a couple styling products that will highlight the layers. It’s best to apply a handful of product on the top (concentrating them on the mid-shaft and ends) before getting to the ‘tentacles’, for more lustre and bounce.

You may also add volume and form to your jellyfish cut by using heat tools (like a curling iron or blow dryer). To properly emphasise the hybrid cut, you can even go as far as braiding the longer sections and adding contrasting colours. This will definitely give your fresh cut the attention it deserves.
