When was the last time you visited a coffee shop where there was milk on tap? Probably a long time ago, or never, right? Well, now you have the opportunity to purchase fresh milk on tap – and not from a cafe or restaurant, but a grocery store!
Farm Fresh Bhd, the largest integrated manufacturer of dairy products manufactured from fresh raw milk in Malaysia, has stepped up its commitment to sustainability by introducing milk on tap, in collaboration with Jaya Grocer! And the company is urging customers to purchase the fresh milk in reusable bottles.
Milk On Tap @ Jaya Grocer was recently unveiled at Jaya Grocer 163 Retail Park, Mont Kiara, by Farm Fresh’s founder and CEO, Loi Tuan Ee. Customers at the grocer can get fresh milk dispensed into Farm Fresh glass bottles at the same price of RM7.90 per litre, with only a one-time payment of RM3 per empty bottle. They can return the bottle at their next purchase in exchange for a newly-filled bottle.
To commemorate the event, Loi played the role of “milkman” at the kiosk and served Adelene Foo, CEO of Jaya Grocer, fresh milk in glass bottles. Adelene Foo then declared that Jaya Grocer will forgo the RM3 fee for the first 1,000 consumers who choose this environmentally-friendly method of purchasing milk. Adelene said she hopes customers will make full use of this environmentally-friendly option and help reduce the use of plastics.
“We’re happy to collaborate with Farm Fresh on this worthy initiative, as we share similar concerns over sustainability. We believe our customers are equally concerned with the proliferation of single-use plastics,”— Adelene Foo.
Jaya Grocer, Malaysia’s leading lifestyle fresh market brand, is considering extending the service to other Jaya Grocer outlets, depending on the success of this pilot project.
Adele added that the programme is part of Jaya Grocer’s service culture, which seeks to introduce new and innovative ways to delight its customers. They aim to make each visit to Jaya Grocer a fulfilling experience and this time, they’re happy to help customers reduce plastic waste – one glass bottle at a time. According to Loi, dispensing fresh milk to consumers in reusable glass bottles is already practiced in Western countries. This is not only seemingly fresher, but would also help make the zero-waste objective more achievable.
Farm Fresh has also taken a corporate policy stand to reduce its carbon footprint and take pro-active steps to be more environmentally responsible. Loi mentioned that currently, 37% of the turnover comes from products that use fully recyclable and sustainably-forested packaging, and they aim to increase that level in the future.
“We don’t need everybody to make a massive change. We just need a lot of people to make a small change,”— Loi
In thanking Jaya Grocer for being highly-receptive to the idea, Loi commented that it was an example of how industry could help tackle the plastics problem and reduce the loads at landfills.
