I’m A Liver, Not A Fighter: Detoxing Your Liver Using Traditional Chinese Medicine

For optimal health

The primary function of our livers is to assist us with detoxification. But how many of you could say that you’re actually cooperating to make your liver’s job simpler? Cocktails, long sedentary work days, snacking, bad sleep, poor circulation, and not consuming enough herbs or high-fiber foods to keep everything moving can make it difficult for our liver to function properly, so it is our job to help our primary detox organ get a boost. Enter Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM, is known to be responsible for not just metabolizing toxins, but helping to regulate us energy-wise. Our Qi, which refers to the energetic life force, runs all the way through our bodies, and when everything is in balance, we have a gloriously clear flow and all systems are operational. However, when they’re stagnant, we have a block in our energetic flow – which affects us physically and emotionally.

While a bad diet and lack of physical activity can cause stagnation and depression, emotional moods can also have an impact on liver function. The trick is to give our liver a manual treatment to aid this flow of energy:

1. Slapping Massage

If you’ve ever had a pleasant massage that ended with a jolt of slapping the feet, lower legs, arms, or sides of the back along the ribs, you’ve probably noticed that you start to feel more awake, alert and ready to face the day. This is due to the fact that it promotes circulation and awakens energy pathways known as meridians for optimal Qi flow. Lift one arm and give yourself hard pats beneath the arm along the pit and side of the ribcage, up and down, counting each point of contact 49 times before continuing on the other side. In Chinese Medicine, this region or meridian is related to the liver, and the number is crucial for women.

2. Move, Move and Move

A simple stroll around your neighborhood is an easy technique to get lymph circulating, which may assist in stimulating your flow of Qi and help you break free from your own stagnation, whether it is physical or mental. Given how tightly connected they are in TCM, it’s easy to see why exercise is so important.

3. Drink Herbs

Herbs like ginger and turmeric, as well as black pepper, chilis, and other spices, will warm you from the inside out, getting your energy, blood, and liver moving. You may mix them into food or drink. It’s a simple method to get your Qi engine going.
