The three Malaysian handball players have been charged with raping their chaperone.
The alleged gang-rape of the female official has sparked public anger, shocking the country’s sporting fraternity Sukma. The three players were alleged to have raped the girl in a room in Second College, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang, at about 4.10am on July 4.
The victim was a commissions liaison officer for the Federal Territories girls’ handball team at the recent inter-state Malaysia Games.
The three players – Adib Adha Ismail, Megat Farzeril and Mohammad Shaizzad, aged between 18 and 19 – pleaded not guilty. The players however, were freed on bail of RM10,000 despite objections from the prosecutor.
Deputy public prosecutor Tan Gin Han said the court had set August 20 for a judge to announce a possible trial date.
