Men in India have a problem, and it’s really not a “small issue”. A recent survey concluded that over 1,000 men in India found that condoms manufactured in international sizes were too big for the majority of Indian men.
According to the two-year study, more than half of the men had penises that are shorter than the international standards for condoms. This called for condom manufacturers to make condoms of mixed sizes readily available throughout India.
Reproductive health specialist from the Indian Council of Medical Research, Doctor Chander Puri said there was an obvious need in India for “custom-made” condoms, as most of those currently available are too large. While the premise of this survey may leave you chuckling, wearing condoms of the wrong size is potentially dangerous. The report says that one in every five times a condom is used in India, it falls off or tears. This could lead in unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.
1,200 men volunteered to have their penises measured precisely. Scientists even checked if their sample was a representative of India as a whole in terms of class, religion and urban and rural dwellers. Results from the study showed that 60% of Indian men have penises which are between three and five centimeters shorter than international standards used in condom manufacturing.
According to Puri, Indians, or any man for that matter, would be embarrassed about going to a chemist and asking for smaller sized condoms. “Smaller condoms are on sale in India. But there is a lack of awareness that different sizes are available. There is anxiety talking about the issue. And normally one feels shy to go to a chemist’s shop and ask for a smaller size condom.”
Sunil Mehra, former editor of Maxim India, says that men should not be concerned about measuring up internationally.
“It’s not size, it’s what you do with it that matters,” he said. “From our population, the evidence is Indians are doing pretty well”.
Do we agree with Mehra’s point of view? Or are you proud of the way it “hangs”?
