Before-After Images Expose South Korea’s Obsession With Plastic Surgery

We all wonder how South Koreans often look so good. We envy their smooth, radiant skin, those vibrant wide-eyed smiles, and their perfectly proportioned facial features. However, South Korea’s fondness of plastic surgery is no secret to the rest of the world.

A 2012 report in The Economist shows that the United States ranks highest in terms of the total number of plastic surgeries performed in the past few years, but South Korea has the highest rate of cosmetic surgery per capita.

South Korean photographer, Ji Yeo explains that women in South Korean culture are enforced the concept of an ideal beauty upon themselves. She criticized that men are judged on their financial balance sheet and women are judged by their beauty.

Ji Yeo made waves with her photography project “Beauty Recovery Room“, which showcased a series of women in the recovery process of cosmetic surgery. Take a look at the haunting images here.

What’s even more startling is that men too are subjected to South Korea’s standard of beauty. An article on RocketNews24 revealed over 30 before and after photos of plastic surgery in Korea. Author Philip Kendall says:

We’ve all seen those “before and after” images in ads popping up online or towards the back of magazines. Liposuction, bigger breasts, smaller nose, hair replacement, breast reduction, wrinkle removal, neck flaps for speed underwater; whatever the goal of the surgery more often than not the post-op photographs are shot from much more flattering angles and under softer light in an attempt to prove that the surgery was a complete success.

Although one or two of the following images are guilty of similar crimes, they are nevertheless undeniably shocking. We’d never dream of telling people what they can and can’t do with their own bodies, but you’ll have to forgive us for having gasped when we first laid eyes on these pre and post-op images. Some of them are so different that we started to wonder whether we were looking at the same people.
