First, toy dogs were the hottest fashion accessories. Blame Paris Hilton for carrying poor Tinkerbell in a handbag, but it appears that there’s a new fashion accessory that lives and breathes, and are just as cute – babies.
In the latest Givenchy campaign, supermodel Mariacarla Boscono was seen clutching her naked baby daughter, Marialucas. It certainly adds an air of felinity and maternal grace to the campaign. Julia Restoin-Roitfeld also launched a website called Romy and the Bunnies – named after her daughter. She says it’s to “merge my sense of aesthetic as an art director, with my discoveries as a new mother.
Trend reporters suggest that this new trend could be linked to the impending birth of the Kim Kardashian and Kanye Wests’ baby. Even designers have started changing their catwalk presentations from full-on shows to smaller events to accommodate their new maternal roles. Lucie Greene, editor of trends forecasters LS:N Global said,”This aspect of their lives has become much more visible.”
“Editors, designers and executives talking about their babies, and featuring them in campaigns, helps them connect with women”.
While Greene does make an argument since a healthy population of the people who eat into fashion are in fact women, it just seems a little too overwhelming to make have an infant part of a fashion campaign. Kimora Lee Simmons has done the same thing by including both her daughters in her Baby Phat campaigns, but if you’ve seen her reality series, you would know that her children actually have their say in the fashion collection. And not to demean babies, what would they really know about being in the style spotlight? Although they’re not totally accessories in these cases we’ve quoted, there’s just something about using your newborn about inspiration that’s a little too overwhelming to believe.
But don’t take our word for it. What do you think?
