We were always taught to practice stretching before and after taking part in high impact exercises to prepare the body, avoiding injuries. We also do it when we wake up in the morning to help refresh. Stretching is a form of exercise that allows you to elongate a specific muscle or muscle group.
Here’s a few reasons why stretching is good for you:
1. Helps Alleviate Pain
You’ll be surprised to know that a painful back is not caused by a painful back. It’s also caused by stiff muscles in the lower back, hamstrings, hips and buttocks. A 5 minute stretch, three to four times a day should help alleviate that pain. (Source)
2. Increases Flexibility
Flexibility refers to how much a muscle lengthens, and that comes from everyday tasks like tying your shoes, reaching up for items in the cabinets, etc.Low flexibility can cause slower body movements and less fluid retention, making you more susceptible to body cramps, sprains and bruises. And stretching will keep your body flexible, keeping you free from injuries.
3. Improves Cardiovascular Health
Studies have shown that stretching can improve artery function and lower blood pressure. So try stretching as often as you can, even when you’re in office or at home. (Source)
4. Increased Energy Levels
Stretching improves the blood flow in your body and muscles, giving more nourishment to the muscles while removing the waste byproducts from the muscles. From this, you’ll feel more energized wherever you are, and you’ll also feel like you’re able to focus a lot more too.
5. Enhanced Coordination
As your muscles firm, it allows your joints more flexibility, giving you better coordination and balance, which helps keep you mobile and less prone to injuries. (Source)
