How to Get on His Parents’ Good Side

The Family Stone (2005)

So he’s asked you to meet his parents. This must mean that he’s excited about the relationship to another level, and you should probably start learning how to impress his parents and win their hearts like you won his! Here’s a couple of things you should do when meeting them so you can expect to hear them call you their ‘new-daughter’.

Bring a Gift
When meeting someone’s parents for the first time, consider getting them something even if they don’t expect you to. It’s a sign of courtesy and you can bring anything from small house decor, flowers, a bottle of wine, chocolates or even something you’ve prepared in your own kitchen. Just remember to plan ahead and make sure they don’t have any allergies and whatnot.

Work on Your Manners
Your parents are not expecting you to curtsy, but some decent manners of shaking their hands while bowing down slightly shows a sign of respect. Watch the way you sit, and we can’t stress enough when it comes to table manners too. Do not eat with your open mouth, and make sure his parents have food on their plate before you dish yours out.

Dress Well
The key here is to look womanly and classy, not trashy. Opt for a modest dress in a dark color, or pair a well-tailored pants with a colored silk blouse. It’s all about looking simple and feminine, so if it feels too plain, add in some dainty accessories and remember to stay away from anything that bares too much skin or cleavage.  Keep your makeup clean and simple – a little lip and cheek tint should do the trick!

 Compliment His Mother
If you’re in their house, flatter her with her dress, the way she decorated the house and even the meal she has prepared. But keep it to a minimum to avoid making it seem like you’re overdoing it.

Don’t Get ‘Handsy’
His parents will be so excited to know how much you’re in love with him, but remember, you want them to think of you as a lady, not a tramp, so dial down the public displays of affection. So, there’s no need to start kissing every time someone says how cute you are together, but you can keep it simple with a peck on the cheek or even holding hand.

Check-in on Them
After you’ve met them, try getting along with his parents and occasionally call them out for dinner, or bond with his mother over coffee or a manicure.  You can also call to see how they’re doing and if they might need help with grocery shopping, etc. This clearly shows you care and are taking an interest in their son and his family.
