When it was released in 2001, The Princess Diaries was a game-changer for millions of millennials. Based on Meg Cabot’s best-selling books, the film follows Mia Thermopolis, an average girl who discovers she is the princess of Genovia. The Princess Diaries established Anne Hathaway as a star and introduced us to one of the finest onscreen duos: Anne and Julie Andrews as Mia and Queen Clarissa Renaldi.
Following the popularity of the first film, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement debuted in 2004. Fans of The Princess Diaries have been clamouring for a third instalment ever since. Is it really going to happen?
The Princess Diaries 3 has been discussed since 2016, and director Garry Marshall was all set for it. “A few weeks ago, I was with Anne Hathaway. It appears that we will be filming The Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan,” Garry told PEOPLE in March 2016. But the iconic filmmaker died a few months later, in July 2016, from pneumonia complications following a stroke. While Disney has not announced The Princess Diaries 3, there was once a script. “A script for the third film has been written… There is a script,” Anne claimed in 2019 on Watch What Happens Live. The script’s plot details have been kept under wraps.
The core ensemble of The Princess Diaries films has agreed to reprise their roles for The Princess Diaries 3. “I’d want to do it. Julie [Andrews] is eager to participate. Our producer, Debra Martin Chase, wants to do it. We all really want that to happen,” Anne stated in 2019 on Watch What Happens Live. “It’s simply that we don’t want to do it until it’s fully perfect, since we love it as much as you do.”
Julie stated in 2020 that she would be “open” to reprise her role as Clarisse, but nothing was put in stone. “I heard there could be one,” she mentioned on The Talk. “It’s long been discussed, but nothing has been on my desk or anything like that. I believe I would [do it]. I’m getting a little crotchety and old. I’m not sure if it’s the right time, but I think working with Annie [Anne Hathaway] again would be wonderful, and I’m sure I’d be up for it.”
Heather Matarazzo, who portrayed Mia’s closest friend Lily, touched on whether or not she’d reprise her role in a 2020 interview commemorating the original film’s 15th anniversary. “Of course, if Annie and Julie are down,” she told Cosmopolitan. If she gets to work with Julie again, Raven-Symone is all in for The Princess Diaries 3. “Can I sing with Julie Andrews again? If yes, then 100% I’m returning to Princess Diaries 3!” she told Buzzfeed. “It would be fantastic if I could sing with Julie Andrews again! I mean, I love Mary Poppins, so that’s just nirvana for me.”
The Princess Diaries films were pivotal in the lives of many fans growing up. Disney took the princess-sy concept and modernised it. Who doesn’t want to see Mia as Genovia’s queen in The Princess Diaries 3? Give them what they want! GIVE US WHAT WE WANT!

If they are actually considering doing #ThePrincessDiaries3 I will literally be pushing past people to see it first. A queen in never late. Everyone else is simply early. ♥️ pic.twitter.com/ICTyKIc2RB
