Have Millennials Devalued The Phrase “I Love You”?

Do you really mean it?

It’s 2022, and one of my 54 new year resolutions is to be more selective when it comes to who and what I decide to pour my energy into. I have never been one of those girls who freely and casually throw endearing words at anyone – let alone any guys. (Let’s not be that girl, shall we?) But if there’s one thing that I noticed in this generation is how commonly people say ‘’I love you’’ to each other without truly meaning it.

Those three little words used to be so sacred. For me, those words are strictly for those who really mean something to me. You know, the people who would know how I take my coffee in the morning, and if I were to go missing, they’d know exactly where to find me. But now? Millennials have even abbreviated those three special words, which are casually dropped at the end of any text or DM, or worse, dating app!

When you say those three sacred, remarkable little words, is it out of habit because it’s a common phrase now, or is it truly from your heart?

So here I am, a woman who is in her mid 20’s, who would like to ask you dudes and dudettes – when you say those three sacred, remarkable little words, is it out of habit because it’s a common phrase now, or is it truly from your heart? We all know that feeling when you say it from the heart, or when you hear someone say it to you from their heart. It makes you feel all warm inside, and when said for the first time by a certain someone, it can literally feel like an explosion of excitement, butterflies, and joy all in one.

The next time you want to say it out of habit, maybe hold back, and save it for when you really mean it

I understand that we live in a world where we constantly upgrade, change, and evolve – but that doesn’t mean we can dishonor the parts that feel sacred, safe and long-lasting. So, the next time you want to say it out of habit, maybe hold back, and save it for when you really mean it.

Please, for the love of Cupid, put the spark back into those three magical words.
