Simple suggestions to help ease your mind during anxious moments

Anxiety – it sneaks up on us when we least expect it. However, for some, it is a daily fight or flight struggle that requires tremendous mental effort to overcome. I am no expert, but in the past few weeks, I have noticed a lot of social media friends sharing simple suggestions, things they’d do to help ease their mind during anxious moments – so I figured I’d make a list of items that I find beneficial to focus on when my nerves get the best of me.

Please note that these are only recommendations to help you relax during your stressful times. If you’re suffering from chronic anxiety, we suggest you consult your doctor.

1. Avoid Overeating

Replace overeating with meal prepping instead. It is better for you to plan your meals in advance to ensure they are healthy and fulfilling. By having your meals ready, it will keep you from relying on quick, unhealthy meals and snacks.

2. Avoid Smoking/ Vaping

Instead, grab something else (if possible, something sweet), such as lollipops, candy, drinking water or liquids, or chewing gum. Having other oral sensations helps replace the urge.

3. Avoid Social Media

Please log off social media the second you start to feel anxious. Instead, spend time with people, in person. It may seem harmless, but being on social media subjects you to social comparison. In moments of anxiety, the last thing you need is the added stress of seeing what other people are doing. Focus on yourself and how you feel during these times.

4. Avoid Caffeinated Drinks

Opt for herbal teas. Also, make sure to drink enough water daily.

5. Avoid Overthinking

How about you shut down the world by taking a nap? You’ll feel better about yourself knowing that you put your mental health first.

6. Avoid Sitting In One Place

If you can’t sleep, get going. Walking around the neighbourhood, or driving out to get coffee, could help overcome your worry. For a better solution, let your friends know you need a little distraction. Plan some outside activities to clear your mind.

7. Avoid Making Assumptions

Do not jump to conclusions. Focus on the facts at hand first. By doing this, you can avoid making false assumptions. You know what they say: when you assume, you make an ass out of u and me.
