Former The Voice contestant and runner up, Dia Frampton, has revealed that sexism and ageism is still very rampant in the Hollywood music industry. Dia is also the former front-woman of Indie rock band Meg & Dia.
Frampton, 29, wrote an essay entitled ‘I’d Get To the Top of the Mountain if It Would Just Stop F***ing Growing’ to explain how her age has come in between her and success of her albums.
She auditioned for The Voice years after washing up in public restrooms and crashing over at strangers’ place. Dia finished as the season’s runner-up, behind winner, Javier Colon.
The reality show opened up many opportunities for Dia, but she had to leave behind her band Meg & Dia, because Universal Studios only wanted to sign her. She recorded a solo album, which did moderately well in the Billboard 200 and in Asia, but wasn’t good enough. She was then dropped by Universal. This whole process put a strain on her former bandmate and sister, Meg.
“My heart and soul went into that record, but it just so happens that my heart was half full and my soul was drained and missing something even though I didn’t know what it was,” the essay read.
“I’d go to the studio for writing sessions and feel like a second hand coat. I had a big producer straight up say, ‘Oh, s**t. You’re 29? I didn’t know you were THAT old…you look younger. You’re trying to put out a new album? That’s tough. Good luck.’
Dia Frampton is now in between recording a new album with producer Daniel Heath, Bruises, and working at a supermarket in Los Angeles. In spite of all that setbacks, Dia is determined to make things work. After all, she’s a small town girl from Utah who loves to sing, and she assures us that girl is still inside her.
