Stay young, stay smart, stay slim…with fish?

Red meats or chicken may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Here’s where fish comes in. Fish meat is a healthy alternative meat with plenty of essential elements that can be prepared in a variety of ways. Did we mention fish tastes yummy as well? Heavy consumption of red meat can increase the risk of cancer and heart diseases becomes some red meats are high in saturated fat which raises blood cholesterol.

Fish is a great choice of meat for those who suffer from cardiovascular diseases and everyone regardless of age should partake a proper quantity of fish every week to fight off diseases ranging from a child’s immune system to prostate cancer.

Fish as we all know contains essential Omega 3 fatty acids and these are heavily found it ocean fish such as salmon, cod, herring and sardines. These fats have been proven to slow down the aging process, protect the nervous system and stimulate mental development in children and adults. Old people who consume fish three to four times weekly are also less probable to suffer from the dreaded Alzheimer’s Disease.

According to specialty studies, brain is the greatest consumer of energy and its well-functioning depends in a certain way by the consumption and absorption of phosphorus and implicitly, it depends on eating fish meat. New mothers who ate fish during preganancy or while breast feeding also noticed faster mental growth and higher level of intelligence in their kids.

If you’re looking to lose weight but don’t want to eliminate meat completely from your diet, note that fish contain less lipids (fats) and calories but at the same time has a high content of minerals, especially iron, phosphorus, zinc, copper, calcium, but also olygoelements such as fluoride, selenium, cobalt and manganese. What a mouthful of nutritions you’re getting! That’s not all, fish meat also contains all the types of B vitamins. Do note that like all other meat and vegetables, fish can lose its nutritive value if it is processed or fried hence why the Japanese have theirs raw.

There are many ways to cook fish from deep frying, the tangy assam pedas style to the pan fried method garnished with boiled garden vegetables to satiate your palate every day of the week.

If you dislike the fishy smell from fish, simply add ginger or green onion to your cooking. You can also try adding lemon juice, vinegar, wine or rice wine to neutralize fish fat which contains trimethylamine, a substance discharged when the fish is not fresh. Other sources suggest soaking your fish in soy milk or plain old milk as it can absorb the fishy smell. Remember to rinse your fish well before marinade or cooking.

Teach a person the benefits of fish and they’ll be good for life! Now if only we could get our favorite fast food eateries to introduce them into the menu…
