Getting a good night’s sleep, especially after an extremely tiresome day, can be difficult. With the elevated stress, piled-up deadlines and dealing with pandemic-related issues, many of us have succumbed to unhealthy lifestyle choices.

Food and drink fuel our bodies – giving it essential nutrients and nourishment. When we get overwhelmed with work and home duties, often time, the victim is our sleep. Nailing a good night’s sleep is impossible for many adults today, and for that, our lifestyle is to blame.

It’s important to have a night ritual to prep our body and mind before hitting the bed. This way, your body is calm and ready to indulge in peaceful sleep. So, the big question is: how do you calm your senses and mind when it’s the best time to finish-off leftover work and binge on Netflix? Easy – have a drink.

These DIY drinks are highly regarded when it comes to achieving a good night’s sleep. Get your hands on these drinks before bed, and you’ll thank us for the snore later.

Herbal teas are best known for their natural properties to help you relax after a tiring day. Chamomile teas are rich in antioxidant and the components in the flowers have a soothing effect which induces sleep. This tea is also great for those suffering from anxiety and depression.

How to make this tea: All you need to do is boil water and add some tea into it. Let it brew for some time. Once done, pour some in a glass and sip it slowly, while inhaling the earthy aroma.

Milk with turmeric

This is one of the staple and most popular drinks in India because of the many benefits it gives. The reason why our ancestors have sworn by this magic yellow milk is because it has the power to calm you down and tune up on the sleep. Milk possesses generous amounts of the amino acid tryptophan, which turns into a hormone called melatonin when consumed. That’s what makes you sleepy.

Turmeric on the other hand is lauded for it anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps with digestion. That’s one of the reasons Turmeric is vastly used in Indian cooking.

When both these agents are combined into a power-packed drink, it’s the perfect warm and fuzzy drink to help you hit the sack. If you’re vegan or lactose intolerant, you can always swap the milk with any other plant-based milk out there.

How to make this tea: Making this drink can’t get any easier. Simply add a pinch of turmeric in hot milk and stir away! If you want to enhance the taste, you can add cinnamon or ginger. If you like it sweet, then adding a few drops of honey will do the trick!

Lemon balm tea

Lemon balm has been used for a long time now to relieve anxiety and stress, while inducing a calming effect. It is also used to ease insomnia, indigestion and much more. While lemon balm has a unique flavour profile of tartness and sweetness, its fresh citrusy and minty taste makes it a perfect drink for the night.

How to make this tea: The best way to make this tea is by soaking the dried or fresh leaves in hot water for about 10-15 minutes. Strain it and enjoy it with honey as per your taste.
