Langkawi is a favorite holiday destination among both Malaysian and international tourists, and one is spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing an accommodation. However, only a few places stand out on the island in terms of being unique, and Tubotel is one of them.
Owned and run by Alex, an Austrian, and his wife Kookie, Tubotel is a concept hotel that was inspired by Dasparkhotel, a creation of architect Andy Stauss. I had a chance to stay there during a quick two-night trip to the island, and I came back to the hot city of KL with an unforgettable holiday experience.
The rooms
While Tubotel also offers ‘normal’ rooms, the highlight are its colorful rooms made of large drainage pipes. These colorful concrete tubes have double glass doors that open to the sea, guaranteeing a breath-taking view when you wake up in the morning. Each tube has a hand-painted picture on the inside wall, and comes with a king-size bed with storage space underneath, plug points, a fan and air-cond.
Other services at Tubotel
If you just want a quiet weekend getaway, you don’t need to leave Tubotel at all. Your meals are sorted at its own restaurant, and drinks are available at the bar inside. Giant day beds on the sea-front deck offer you a beautiful view of the blue waters, and there are three salt water jacuzzi pools if you want a soak in the sun.
If you’re coming with friends, Alex can help organize an island-hopping trip, a mangrove tour or a small party on one of the nearby islands, which is a great idea for a reunion, a company trip or even a wedding! Those who want to do good during the holiday can hop on Alex’s Eco Pirate boat for a beach clean up on the tiny island just across from Tubotel.
Verdict
One word that would sum up my getaway experience at Tubotel: Fantastic. Alex and his team (not to forget his friendly wife Kookie and adorable daughters) provided us with good service, and the stay in the tubes was one-of-a-kind, not to mention affordable. However, the communal bath area (with individual shower and toilet stalls) might take a little getting used to if one is not a frequent budget traveller, but the amazing view of the ocean makes up for it. Tubotel is also excellently located, as Langkawi’s famous Pantai Cenang stretch is only 10 minutes walk away, and you can opt for a motorcycle or car rental.
I’d recommend Tubotel to anyone who’s heading to Langkawi, and you’ll come back missing the tube and the blue waters that greet you every morning.
