If you live in areas like Bukit Bintang, Bukit Damansara, Sri Hartamas, Solaris Mont Kiara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail and Bangsar, you will notice an exorbitant surge in parking fees starting today.

All parking bays owned by DBKL within the central business district will experience a 150% hike in hourly parking fees. The rates have been increased from 80 cents to RM 2 for the first hour, RM 3 for the second hour, and RM 3 for subsequent hours.

Other areas further out like Brickfields, Taman Maluri, Cheras, Wangsa Maju and Setapak will also experience a hike between 55% and 75%.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Mohd Amin Nordin Abdul Aziz justified the hike by saying it was not meant to make more profits for DBKL or the Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan (YWL), but rather to curb the congestion in the city, to encourage people to carpool, and use the public transport.

“I know I am going to be very unpopular, but it has to be done because traffic in Kuala Lumpur is already bursting at the seams,’’ the mayor said.

Will this move really help to reduce the number of cars on the road? What say you?
