DIY: How to Hair-Chalk with Cream Eyeshadow

Hair chalking is an easy and inexpensive way to give your hair some cool temporary color without the commitment. Hair chalks or pastels were made popular after Lauren Conrad’s multi-colored strands were seen on her beauty blog, The Beauty Department. Soon, the whole world was obsessed with getting their hands on pastels and hair-chalks from craft stores.

While we do love hair chalks and all the fun it can supply, there are a couple of concerns that weren’t very convenient. First off, there’s a chance that it can make your hair really frazzled after application. It’s also very messy and it can stain your hands and clothes, and worst of all – when the chalk starts to dry, the residue starts to dust over your shoulders, which may cause your clothes to stain. Obviously, we wanted alternatives.

Our deep, hard thoughts led us to one of Maybelline New York best creations ever – the 24-HR Color Tattoo Cream Eyeshadows. These babies are little pots of heaven. Not only do they provide long-lasting color, but the color intensity is something worth going crazy over. And boy, were we right – these cream eyeshadows are the best thing to use if you want to give your hair some temporary color.

Using Tenacious Teal and Painted Purple, here’s how you can give yourself a mermaid-hair effect in four simple steps!

1. First, apply some hair serum through the parts of your hair you want to color. This is to allow a smoother application and to protect your hair at the same time.

2. Then, use your finger tip and scrape out a decent chunk of eyeshadow cream. Apply it straight to a thin lock of hair and just spread it down. Stick to one direction when you apply, preferable from top to bottom. Use more color until you achieve your desired result. TIP: It may take a few applications to get the color to show if you hair dark hair.

3. Once you’ve completed it, spritz a little hair-smoothing spray over the colored hair, and then use a fine-toothed comb and comb through to detangle your hair. It may turn out a little sticky, but its a much bearable texture than using a hair chalks.

We highly recommend using the Tangle Teezer. The fine bristled-comb detangles every strand of hair without pulling, tugging or yanking! [Get it from Luxola].

4. After combing through, take out your hair-dryer, flat iron or curling iron and apply heat to the colored part of your hair to seal the color in. Then, style like you usually would.

A good mix of blue and purple hues. To remove, just shampoo your hair like normal and the color will wash off easily and the shadow does not affect the texture of your hair like hair chalks do. Just remember to use a good conditioner after to replenish the nutrients back in your hair.

Maybelline New York 24-HR Color Tattoo is available in all leading pharmacies nationwide for on RM19.90.
