Sometimes, we can get really stressed out and frustrated with school, work or even with personal matters. When our minds are completely overworked, this will ultimately stop us from being productive and we would be unable to make proper decisions wisely. When you’re faced with such tension, it’s advisable to take a step back to relax and calm your mind, body and soul. To help you, here are five simple and quick exercises that you can do to feel serene.

1. Deep breathing

Deep breathing can reduce the effects of stress by slowing the heart rate and lowering the blood pressure. Sit up straight, and with your eyes closed, place your hand on your belly. Then, slowly inhale through your nose until you feel your breath work its way to the top of your head. Reverse the process by exhaling through your mouth and do this for five minutes.

2. Acupressure

This method can really help to release all the tension inside of you and it is a touch therapy which works by balancing the circulation of fluids and energies in the body. Use your thumb and forefinger to massage the soft area between the thumb and index finger of the other hand. Do this for a few minutes and for extra relaxation, dab on some aromatherapy oil.

3. Meditation

This is the number one way to relax your mind and will help to clear your mental clutter, hence releasing feel-good substances into your system. Find a comfortable and quiet spot nearby, sit down, then close your eyes and try to visualise a blank white space. Concentrate on your breath and think of a positive mantra such as, “I feel at peace”. Do this for five minutes and you’ll slowly feel your anxieties disappear.

4. Progressive Relaxation

Progressive relaxation involves tensing the muscles in one body part each time to achieve a state of calmness. Starting with the upper part of your body and working your way towards your toes, just squeeze and tense up your body, release and repeat. You’ll be surprised at how much this will help.

5. Visualization

This method requires no practice and is the easiest to do. Just go on a mental vacation by imagining a scene that makes you feel happy and peaceful. When you’ve got the thought in your head, just let it flow and hold on to that image because it will give you good feelings.
