It’s hard to control our cravings when we have so much food to try in Malaysia, and it’s no surprise that sticking to a diet is such a challenge. A recent study suggests that stocking up fresh veggies and fruits can easily control our diet, even if you don’t eat them.

Scientists from the University of Leeds have discovered that looking and smelling healthy food can help dieters stick on their weight-loss goals. In other words, healthy foods can provide an instant reminder to dieters to reduce food consumption.

Based on the study conducted, people reduced their chocolate consumption by more than half if they smelt a fresh orange first. And diners who started with salad instead of garlic bread went on to eat a smaller portion of their main course. The sight of lettuce (fresh veggies) reminded them about their diet. Isn’t that impressive?

Researcher Nicola Buckland recommends stocking up fresh fruits in the fridge as this could be an extra help for those who don’t have enough strong will to stick their diet plans.

“Take a few moments to focus on the sensory properties of healthy food, such as the sight and smell of fruit or salad vegetables,” said Buckland. The diet cues may be most useful when an individual is hungry and tempted to eat unhealthy junk food or overindulge.
