So, turns out a school district has discriminated against a 6-year-old transgender girl from using the girls’ bathroom in her own school!
6-year-old Coy Mathis was barred from using the girls’ bathroom of her school because of her gender identity. This ruling was based on the Colorado Civil Rights Division.
Administrator of the school informed her parents that she would have to use the boys’ bathroom, a staff bathroom or the nurse’s bathroom instead, citing that “some parents and students are likely to become uncomfortable” with Mathis’ presence in the girl’s restroom. They also suggested that it would be “psychologically damaging” to other students.
Fortunately, the civil rights division rejected the school’s premise, saying that for the school to tell “Mathis” that “she must disregard her identity while performing one of the most essential human functions constitutes severe and pervasive treatment, and creates and environment that is objectively and subjectively hostile, intimidating or offensive”, said division director Steven Chavez.
While waiting for the division ruling, Coy was homeschooled. But now that Coy’s won the right to use the girls’ bathroom at her school, she asked her mother, “So I can go to school and make friends?” [Source]
