The traumatized father of the 23-year old Delhi gang-rape victim wants to reveal his daughter’s name.
On December 16th, the medical student was brutally assaulted by six men in a moving bus. The Indian and world wide media has refrained from naming her due to the nature of the case. Furthermore, Indian law forbids revealing the name of a rape victim unless her family agrees to it.
The father of the victim, Badri Singh Pandey said,”We want the world to know her real name. My daughter didn’t do anything wrong, she died while protecting herself. I am proud of her. Revealing her name will give courage to other women who have survived these attacks. They will find strength from my daughter”.
For the past few weeks, the media addressed the victim as Nirbhaya, Damini, Amaanat, or Braveheart. But her real name is:
Jyoti Singh Pandey
She was a 23-year old physiotherapy student, who was determined to build a successful career for herself. She died in Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore on 28th December 2012, where she suffered from severe organ failure due to the extreme nature of the crime against her. (Source)
In the meantime, five of the men accused will face a death penalty if convicted, and are also charged with kidnap, robbery and conspiracy over the attack. The sixth is under the age of 18, and will therefore be tried in a juvenile court.
Two of the men are currently seeking a plea bargain to escape their death penalty.
