Resting bitch face (RBF) is a real global phenomenon and it’s ruining lives one b*tch face at a time. Okay, that might be a bit exaggerated. But honestly, sometimes, it can be annoying having to deal with the constant miscommunication and trying to explain to people that you’re not actually in a bad mood. There was even a study conducted to analyze the faces of celebrities like Kanye West, Kristen Stewart, Anna Kendrick, and Queen Elizabeth II, all of whom are notable public figures known for their occasional less-than-pleased expressions. It can be hard to have a resting face that makes you seem like you’re always in a bad mood. People would even hesitate to approach you at times, treating you differently compared to people with friendlier expressions. Though RBF can be intentional, for many of us, it’s just our face!
So here are 5 things us crossed-faced girlies want you to know:
1. Don’t tell us that we should smile more
If you have resting bitch face, you’ve probably been told by someone to “smile more” at one point or another. News flash: the more you talk about how unhappy we look, the more unhappy we become. So why bother telling us we should smile more? There’s no need to force a smile, we’ll smile when we feel like it!
2. Telling us you thought we were “bitchy” the first time we met is awkward
This is another recurring thing that people with RBF have to deal with whenever they meet someone new. First of all, why would you tell us that? What are you trying to gain from this conversation? And how are we supposed to respond to that? See, now you’ve made the situation awkward, and both of us have to sit in this miserable silence because you said you didn’t like us at first. So don’t judge us on face value, we’re quite delightful people once you get to know us!
3. We’re not bored, it’s just our neutral face
It’s almost as if because we don’t combust from pure euphoria, do a happy dance, and jump up and down in excitement, we’re automatically assumed to not be having a good time. When our RBF is our neutral face, it’s bound to show up when we’re just hanging out and having a normal conversation. Just know that our RBF is NOT a true reflection of how we are feeling!
4. Don’t be afraid to talk to us
It might be hard to believe, but most of us aren’t mean people. We’re actually quite nice once you start the conversation. However, despite the many unnecessary comments about our facial expressions, there are some perks that come with it. For example, it’s great for showing people when we don’t want to be bothered, so they’ll leave us alone and let us sulk in our bitchy mood.
5. Try smiling at us
Chances are, we will most likely return the gesture if you flash a smile at us. Yes, it can be awkward showing your pearly whites to someone who looks like they just had the worst day of their life, but just try it – you’ll be surprised at just how friendly we are!
