Whenever you step into a spa, you’re immediately greeted by a warm and welcoming fragrance emanating from the spa’s diffuser. It’s calming and soothing, and every whiff relaxes you not only physically, but mentally as well.

It’s safe to assume that essential oils are quite crucial when it comes to practicing self-care. Not only can you add them to your diffuser, but a few drops during bath time, or a massage, can do wonders. For those who may not know, essential oils are concentrated extracts from a range of fragrant plants which have been used for centuries in aromatherapy.

Besides having therapeutic properties, they have medicinal benefits and you’d be impressed by how much just a few drops can do. Some essential oils have their own benefits and methods of use, so here are 10 popular essential oils you may need to keep in your drawer.

Lavender

If you have trouble sleeping, lavender is the best scent to help you treat your insomnia. A few drops of this in your diffuser, or massage them onto your temples, and you’ll have a good night’s rest and wake up refreshed. It also may help soothe your anxiety, as well as minor skin injuries and sinus congestion.

Eucalyptus

Everyone’s favorite scent, eucalyptus not only smells heavenly, but can treat various common conditions, including asthma and nasal congestion. You can use eucalyptus to soothe your headache as well, and calm your nerves.

Tea Tree

You may be familiar with tea tree, especially if you’re an avid skincare enthusiast. Tea tree has a strong medicinal scent that does wonders for your skin. It can treat skin conditions like acne and warts, which is why you may find tea tree in most acne treating products.

Sandalwood

Woody and earthy, you may typically find sandalwood in men’s cologne. But did you know that sandalwood has anti-inflammatory properties that can help treat skin conditions such as acne, eczema and even psoriasis? The scent of sandalwood can also help you focus on tasks that you need to finish sooner.

Cedarwood

For those who typically experience joint pains and sore muscles, you may need cedarwood in your life. The oil can also ease other problems with your body, as well as regulate your menstruation.

Lemon

Lemon’s medicinal properties are well known and documented. Lemon oil can do everything from treating bug bites and pimples, to improving your blood circulation and mood.

Lemongrass

Time to withhold that serai from your asam pedas, as lemongrass has tons of healing properties. Studies have shown that lemongrass can alleviate anxiety and reduce high blood pressure, among other benefits.

Peppermint

Peppermint can relieve nasal congestion and improve digestion. If you’re feeling nauseous during the day, just take a whiff of peppermint oil, and you’ll feel much better.

Rosemary

While rosemary is mainly used in cooking, it’s been proven to enhance and boost mental activity. It’ll make you become more alert, reduce stress levels, and improve your mood.

Jasmine

To rejuvenate yourself after a long day of work, add a few drops of jasmine into your diffuser, or massage them on your wrists so that the scent can envelope you. It’s a natural remedy that can balance your hormones and alleviate your anxiety and insomnia.
