Sometimes, a dark and somber mood is all we want to channel, so we tend to gravitate towards wearing all black from head to toe. What’s not to love anyway? It’s cool, makes you look bad a**, effortlessly chic and it’s completely foolproof. Having said that, if not done correctly, heading out in a monochrome ensemble can make you look boring, goth and just a tad bit dowdy. So, follow these tips to pull off the look like a pro!

1. Choose a statement piece – Bring sophistication to your outfit by selecting one article of clothing that stands out and then create the whole look based on that particular item. It could be a leather jacket with rugged zipper detailing, an oversized faux fur coat, a fringed vintage kimono or high shine disco pants. This makes sure that you find a balance when putting together your look and don’t go over the top.

2. Play with textures – The beauty of wearing all black is that you can mix various textures and still look fabulous. Knit goes very well with leather and suede. If you’re wearing chiffon, you can try adding some mesh or velvet to the look. The possibilities are endless so you’ll just have to experiment.

3. Add accessories – You can jazz up your look with a statement purse, a cute scarf, a belt to define your waist, or even a combination of some of your favourite jewelry. Go ahead and layer your necklaces or have an arm party with a few dainty bangles. Add on a floral brooch if you wish! Black goes very well with silver or gold, but a hint of colour won’t hurt anyone.

4. Create silhouettes – With the subdued colour palette, adding silhouettes would make your look more interesting. Wearing skinny jeans? Throw on a peplum top or an oversized cardigan. Don’t know what to pair with your basic crop top? Try a flared-bottom midi skirt for a touch of glam.

5. Jazz it up with makeup – Wearing all black doesn’t stop you from putting on a bold and bright lip colour or a strong smokey eye. In fact, your makeup can pull the whole look together and amp up your game.

6. Say yes to graphics – Going plain is always good, but when you want to take your all-black outfit to the next level, graphics can do the trick. A cosy sweater with a quirky print adds a dose of cool to your ensemble and draws the attention of the viewer or passersby.
