Malaysians are awesome. I’m Malaysian and I love the people that live in this country. I mean, nowhere else in the would you find three different races living together in perfect harmony. But like everywhere else in the world, there are some bad batches and I’m here to address it. Some Malaysians take the rest of us for granted and refuse to practice any form of good manners, which can get a little frustrating. So, in case you didn’t know here are some of the things we can do to be better for each other:

Wait your turn before entering the elevator:
This may seem like a simple thing that everyone should be aware of, but believe or not some Malaysians still don’t get that you shouldn’t barge into the elevator as soon as the doors open. It’s rude and inconsiderate, so step aside and allow for people to come out first before you get into the elevator. This also helps the traffic to be more seamless!

Use the escalator more often:
The best option would be using the stairs because not only is it quicker but you’re also able to squeeze in a quick cardio. I’ve noticed that more than a handful of Malaysians would happily choose the elevator because it’s “easier” but in actual fact, you’re making it hard for people with disabilities, parents with strollers and older folks that aren’t as mobile and agile. Seriously, don’t be lazy!

Wait in line:
There are a lot of rude Malaysian drivers out there that think their time is more important than others, so they resort to cutting queue when others have been waiting for say, over an hour. This is just plain rude and super inconsiderate. If you’re late getting to somewhere then make it a point to start your day earlier, that way you don’t have to behave like a total a**hat on the road.

Say thank you more often:
I make it a habit to hold the door open for people because it doesn’t hurt me and it’s just polite to. I’m not expecting a tip for holding the door open but a simple thank you would be greatly appreciated.

Be nicer to waitstaff:
A common mistake I have noticed with Malaysians is that some tend to be a little rude to waitstaff because they feel that this may not be the most glamorous form of occupation. These people need to rehash this type of mentality because the waitstaff are the people that bring you your food, so don’t be rude.

Giving priority to the elderly and needy:
A common occurrence amongst the Malaysian public transport system is that there are some selfish individuals who continue to get comfortable on a seat when there’s a pregnant lady standing or an elderly woman looking for a seat. Always give up your seat to those that need it because even if you’ve had a long day, they still need to sit down more than you do.

Taking parking spots that aren’t theirs:
This has happened one too many times to me. Some people just don’t care and take into consideration that someone has waited for ages to find a parking spot, so they proceed to simply park. Be kind and take note that there is someone waiting for the empty lot and you shouldn’t just drive in and claim it.
