Celebrating its recent makeover was just one of the reasons to make RAWR at 1 Mont Kiara’s rooftop abuzz with some of Malaysia’s hottest talents, as they belted out original hits, globally-recognised covers, and even had the 800-plus person crowd doubling over in fits of laughter.
As the sunlight dwindled over the city skyline, friends and families picked a comfy spot to chill and relax while the smell of barbecued meat filled the air. Then, songbirds serenaded from the stage and comedians sent the crowd howling in laughter.
RAWR is 1 Mont Kiara’s answer to music and comedy, showcasing “glocal” talent and acquainting the public with the local music and comedy scene. In conjunction with the recent mall refurbishment, 1 Mont Kiara wanted to celebrate with its community by hosting an event that espouses community values.
Held at the spacious expanse above the mall, RAWR is a display of 1 Mont Kiara’s continual commitment to the communities it serves and an exemplar of how not all the best events in town are necessarily black-tie affairs.
Boy-next-door Narmi charmed the audience with his lighter-than-air voice and arguably expanding his fanbase with his simplistic and moving compositions. Rising star Talitha Tan offered guests a sample of her own music, strumming her guitar as she delighted listeners with her sultry voice.
Malaysia’s very own “Pocket Dynamite”, Prema Yin, sang a medley of her own songs and covers, and also delivered her latest single “Ring My Bell”. In addition to having Stephanie Tham perform with her, Prema’s partner for her enticing performance was speed painting artist Tracia Chan, showcasing raw talent and skill. These two stunning pieces were then presented as gifts to the 1 Mont Kiara management team by the artist.
“Barefoot musician”, 19 year old Christian B Palencia, who recently released his EP Adrenaline, continued to inspire his listeners with his music and idiosyncratic personality. Guitar hero Ray Cheong was up next and he displayed his virtuosity with the guitar through percussive beats and dramatic riffs.
Swing jazz band Fazz, who specialises in fusing elements of vaudeville with a dash of cabaret, played toe-tapping original compositions that have earned them recognition among popular music haunts in Kuala Lumpur.
The fabulous Rozz, a prolific performer who’s got the looks and the sass also amped up the event. With the added showmanship of fireworks during Rozz’s performance, he went out in style belting out classics that everyone could reminisce to.
RAWR wasn’t just about the music. Canadian humourist Anton Gillich made the scene at 1 Mont Kiara and interacted with the guests during his rip-roaring performance, supported by his band of merry wisecrackers, including Ross Stephenson, Kavin Jay, and Luwita Randhawa.
