Day in, day out, we subject ourselves to facing the four walls of our office for hours and hours long. So much so that the only time we get to see the world outside is when we step out for meals. And even that is confined to a certain proximity (mostly walking distance). If we’re lucky, we get off work early and hit the gym. Again, for maybe an hour plus or so, we face four walls..of a gym.
Will the vicious cycle ever end?
Here’s an interesting alternative.
Despite the hot and humid climate that we live in, the “green workout” scene is steadily booming. What exactly is the “green workout” scene? Working out (walking, trekking, jogging, running) outdoors. And why shouldn’t it be? All the facilities and amenities you need for a workout outdoors have been well provided for because our tropical Kuala Lumpur is home to many great spots, parks, and green areas to explore.
Some “green workout” hotspots are such as:
1. KLCC Pack. Adjacent to the Petronas Twin Towers in the city centre, the park attracts a mixed crowd of walkers and runners in the early mornings (and sometimes, in the evenings too). The 1.3km-track park is also dotted with water fountains so there’s no need to carry a bottle of h20 with you when you run.
2. Lake Gardens. Also known as Taman Tasik Perdana. It is located opposite the Malaysian National Monument and has a combination of a hilly or a flat run. The track goes almost 4km around small lakes, prettily groomed terraces, and through a light forest. Water and washrooms are available nearby.
3. Bukit Kiara Jogging Track. This 5km tarmac road (that is closed to all traffic except cyclists) is perhaps the most challenging workout trails. However, you’d be hard-pressed to find more pleasant, tree-lined scenery elsewhere. May we also add that it’s a hotspot for cyclists too (just saying). A word of warning though, there are no washrooms or water fountains nearby so please go prepared. Or rather, properly unloaded.
Studies have shown that the “green workout” is a therapeutic intervention to help reduce stress, help people achieve a greater feeling of revitalization, and encourage an abundant flow of positive energy. So, all that tension, confusion, anger, and for some, depression, can be toned down gradually as long as the “green workout” is consistent.
With that, we say, what are you waiting for? Feel “human”, take breaths of fresh air, and stop confining yourself to the four walls of a gym. The big and beautiful outdoors awaits you!
