Unemployed fresh graduates have been in the news a lot of late for all the wrong reasons. Sometimes, it isn’t so much that you know all the answers about the firm, the industry or your future but how you carry and present yourself signals that you cared enough about this process to be well prepared. Here are some tips on how you can score that dream job.

1. Dress to impress

Unless you’re looking for a career in the fashion industry, many employers tend to take it the wrong way if you show up like a popsicle or worse, in leopard prints. It’s nice to show some personality maybe use a bright colored scarf or pumps but keep your outfits muted, ironed and smart.

2. Punctuality

It would be a good idea to set the time on your watch or mobile phone 10 or 30 minutes earlier (depends on how paranoid or Malaysian you are) and plan your route well so that you reach your interviewer’s place at least 10-15 minutes prior to the interview.

3. Leave your alter ego at home. Doesn’t matter if he’s awesome.

Be yourself. It’s never a good idea to walk into an interview and convince the interviewer youre somebody you’re not because supposed it works and you get hired are you yourself or the person you presented in that interview? It always always matters that you try to present yourself as the person you really are. Even if you’re best known for telling jokes among your friends, do not tell jokes as that may give the impression that you’re not taking the interview seriously.

4. Taming the Butterflies

The truth is its okay to be nervous! It shows that you care and any interviewer who’s paying attention can understand that/ There is a difference between being confident and obnoxious as well as being nervous or unprepared and any experienced interviewer can spot this a mile away. Manage your nerves so that you can articulate the points you want to put forward

5. Show excitement. Not the 6 year old getting their birthday present kind, but a mature excited.

If you’ve done your research properly and you walk in that room with enthusiasm, that’s gonna show. Most companies understand that they don’t always get to hire the finished product, most hire for attitude and train for skills so go in there enthusiastic and you’re halfway there!

6. Don’t Lie

A lot of people tend to embellish their resumes with accomplishments Most employers these days do significant background checks so don’t risk getting caught. Be honest in how you present yourself in writing and in person.

These are just a few but very important tips that will hopefully help you ace that interview be it for a job application or for a scholarship or a beauty pageant. Practice with a family member or friend prior to the interview to help you get over those nerves.

If all else fails, pray. Good luck!
