Once you hit 21, you think you know it all. Hell, even at 18 you thought you knew it all but here is the sad and honest truth… YOU DON’T! There are so many things that you will experience in your twenties that will change the very person you thought you once were. The transition may not necessarily be for the worse but instead it is for the better and it will be the most liberating moment of your life.
Being young, wild, and free is what you crave for in your teens and early twenties but once you get a little more mature, you’ll realise that being your true self is the ultimate goal. From 20 to being almost 30, there are definitely a lot of things I know now that I had no clue of back then:
Friends not fans – When younger, you want as many friends as you can possibly have. But as you get a little older you’ll realise that some friends are not at all that. You’ll come to understand that it’s better to have a few good ones than hundreds of fakers posing as your mates.
Love and all its glory – The only kind of love that will be important to you in your late 20s is the love you have for yourself. Everyone seeks for that “life-changing” love but you will soon discover that it’s been there all along. Finding someone to complement that love you have is just a bonus.
You’re not a fixed mould – You don’t have to do everything the same way. You get to choose the way you want to live your life.
Money is not everything – But it certainly is more than something. A RM100 note would be different to a 30-year-old as how it is to a 20-year-old. Save while you’re young, so the older you won’t suffer.
Words are the most powerful tool – A decade ago, you couldn’t care less what came out of your mouth, but as you get older you’ll realise it is sometimes better to say nothing at all, or say a little less rather. Words have the power to build and destroy, so choose them wisely.
Perfection is a myth – You are never going to look perfect, not in your own eyes anyway, because we’re all our own worst critics. So, you might as well accept, embrace and love all your flaws. Own that sh*t!
Pack your bags – It doesn’t matter if you’re gonna do it alone, or with a best friend but go see the world. Soak in some culture because at this age group, it is so vital that you go on vacation at least once a year.
Never stop learning – Even though you may think you have learned so much about yourself and life in general, keep in mind that there is more. The more you know, the more you don’t know.
Have fun – This is the most important of all. It doesn’t matter at what age you are, you’ve got to have fun. Life is way too boring with all work and no play.
