Karl Largerfeld Breaks Out A ‘Riot’ In A Supermarket For The Latest Chanel Collection

All hell broke loose in a French supermarket on Tuesday morning, as well-heeled shoplifters — including Rihanna and model Cara Delevingne — tried to swipe household goods! Nah, not really.

The scene did happen, but the supermarket, now that was an intentionally built Chanel superstore within the walls of the Grand Palais in Paris and chaos was unleashed but that was by the latest catwalk show from designer Karl Lagerfeld.

The supermarket show was arguably his finest runway imagining to date, considering that he is the designer who has recreated an aeroplane and an iceberg.

Before the show started, guests walked up and down the aisles shrieking with joy at everyday items that were given the Lagerfeld treatment: CoCo Chanel CoCo Pops, and Confiture de Gabrielle – both nods to the house’s founder.

Fashion elites posed with shopping carts in this Warholian fashion extravaganza before models posed as shoppers walking around the superstore in a choreographed performance.

Cara Delevingne stomped through the supermarket selecting a Chanel-branded brandy bottle and large feather duster to a muzak-inspired version of Rihanna’s “Diamonds”. Fellow model Stella Tennant on the other hand, went about her weekly shop carrying a shopping basket made with the trademark Chanel motive chain woven into the basket wire. Another model pulled a padded shopping cart on wheels around the aisles.

Noted as one of Karl’s most inspiring collections yet, the clothes — created within the tough remit of incorporating house codes such as the tweed suit and large petals were relevant to the street culture in the most practical ways. A tweed tracksuit worn with holographic trainers was cool and fitted in fashion’s new direction towards haute comfort dressing. The models had their hair in crimped up ponytails with Chanel tweed rags and edible sweetie necklace — very swampy-chic on a Chanel budget.
