Jodelle Ferland in Case 39 (2009)
This film is about a social worker who fights to save a 10 year-old girl from her abusive family but discovers a reason behind the reason why her parents did what they did. . Jodelle Ferland stars as Lilith Sullivan, the 10 year-old abused victim. It’s quite thrilling to see a character than seems innocent, but Lilith is really someone to fear.
Jennifer Carpenter in Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
Based on a true story “The Exorcism of Anneliese Michel”, Exorcism of Emily Rose made it to the Top 100 Scariest Films Ever Made in 2006, ranking at #86. The move revolves around a homicide case involving a priest who performed an exorcism on a college student – Emily Rose. Jennifer Carpenter plays Emily Rose in this film, and one of her most iconic scenes in the film is Jennifer’s expressions when she reveals the identity of the seven demons in her.
Danielle Panabaker in Friday the 13th (2009)
Friday the 13th is twelfth installment of the American classic slasher film from the 80’s that tells the tale of a group of teenagers who try to escape the attack of one of the most iconic fictional killer ever – Jason! Other than the hunky Jared Padalecki, Danielle Panabaker really helped instill a sense of fear in the film!
Elisha Cuthbert in House of Wax (2005)
House of Wax is a remake of a 1933 film, “Mystery of the Wax Museum”. This film is about an abandoned town discovered by a bunch of unwitting teenagers on their way to a football game in Louisiana. Halfway through the trip, they lost their way and decide to set up camp for the night. A stranger then stops to help them, but it turns out he has something evil planned. Elisha Cuthbert plays the lead female role Carly in the film, and did an impressive job in House of Wax. Her performance was acknowledged as “exceptional” and “fine” by numerous critics.
Belén Rueda in The Orphanage (2007)
The Orphanage is a story about a woman who brings her family into her childhood home and discovers that her son, Simón starts talking to an invisible friend. This is also another remake film based on “El Orfanato”, a Spanish film that won seven Goya Awards. Belén plays the mother that plans to reopen the orphanage for disabled children. Her great performance in The Orphanage earned her several awards for best actress.
Vera Farmiga in The Conjuring (2013)
The Conjuring is based on a true story that revolves around a house plagued by vengeful spirit. The family who lives there, seek the help from private investigators after experiencing a series of terrifying paranormal activities. Vera Farmiga took on the role as Lorraine Warren, an American paranormal investigator who also worked on the Amityville Horror case back in the 70s.
Odette Annable in The Unborn (2009)
The Unborn is about a spirit (dybbuk) that slowly takes control of a young woman’s body. She then seeks help from a rabbi to perform an exorcist. Odette Annable stars as Casey Beldon – a young woman who struggles to fight the spirit taking over her.
Liv Tyler in The Strangers (2008)
The Strangers revolves around a young couple taking a break in their summer house and is terrorised by 3 masked attackers. Liv Tyler stars as a terrified wife who believes that she that there are masked people around the house. Although The Strangers works better as a psychological thriller, it’s refreshing to see Liv Tyler as a paranoid girl-next-door instead of an ethereal Elf princess in Lord of the Rings.
Emily Browning in The Uninvited (2009)
The Uninvited is a remake of a South Korean film, “A Tale of Two Sisters” in 2003. It is a story of two sisters who reunite after one is released from a mental institution after 10 months. At home, they start feeling the presence of a spirit. Emily Browning takes on the role of the mentally troubled sister, Anna Rydell.
Chloë Grace Moretz in Let Me In (2010)
Let Me In is a remake of a Swedish horror film that tells the tale of a bullied 12 year-old boy that soon develops a friendship with his new neighbour Abby, who is also a vampire child. In this film, she promises to protect him from his bullies. Chloë Grace Moretz delivers a remarkable job as Abby, and has won 6 awards for her outstanding performance in this film.
