The recent API ratings in Malaysia are increasing rapidly and the haze is taking away our fresh air. People are starting to wear masks on the streets to avoid inhaling anything toxic, and we recommend doubling their intake of fluids. However, some of us might still suffer from dry throat, cough and lung irritation. We know how irritating and annoying the dry throat is, but you need to drink lots of fluids to soothe it.

Drinking plain water can be boring, so here are five hydrating alternatives to help you soothe your throat during the haze.

Coconut Water
Yes, fresh coconut water can help soothe and hydrates your painful dry throat immediately especially for hot, hazy weather. Coconut water is high potassium content and contains antioxidant, and its best served with chilled without adding ice.

Honey Lemon
Lemon and honey possess well-known and throat-soothing properties. Serve it with warm water will ease the discomfort of your painful throat. Make sure you put the adequate amount of honey (1 tablespoon) and lemon (2 slices) per serving. If not it’ll turns out even worse.

Salt Water
Gargling with a mixture of salt and warm water brings a great relief by cleaning bacteria and improving circulation in the throat area. We recommend gargling with ¼ teaspoon of salt and a cup of warm water. It’s an effective remedy because it mimics the body’s own saline content.

Herbal Tea
There are numerous types of herbal tea soothe dry throats. Self-boiled herbal teas like chamomile, “Lohan Ko”, sugar cane, chrysanthemum can be easily done in a short time. Add a small amount of rock sugar if you like it sweet. Avoid consuming piping hot drinks as it can inflame the throat even more. Opt for lukewarm or chilled instead.

Fresh Soymilk
Soymilk is rich in protein and vitamins. It’s also high in isoflavones and other antioxidants that are beneficial to our health, considering we’re breathing in high levels of toxins in the air. Its preferable to make your own soymilk using a soymilk maker. We highly recommend the Philips Soymilk Maker since you can obtain a fresh jug of soymilk in just an hour. Read our review here.
