7 Top Food Trends of 2013

No one can measure a Malaysian’s enthusiasm to eat. On top of just being able to come up with some of the delicious meals around Asia, it’s hard to ignore the upcoming food trends that everyone’s talking about. With the help of hear-say, recommendations, and of course Instagram, here are seven of the top and upcoming food trends of 2013!

1. Cake
Forget sponge cakes and artistically-designed fondants. Those who never liked cake are now opening their hearts to chunky pieces made in creative flavors. The design is rustic, and the colors are vibrant. Our favorite happens to be the fashionable ombre Pink Stacks at WHISK Espresso Bar + Cake Shop.

2. Sandwiches
Gourmet sandwiches to be exact. Not fast food sandwich joints where you pick out grilled chicken breast slices chocked full with preservatives. We’re talking actual sandwiches in grainy ciabatta, and filled to the brim with fresh cheese and a scoops of freshly grilled/broiled meats. Sandwiches are no longer limited to sandwich bread, so open your mouths to something good now. We highly recommend the Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich at The Bee.

3. Popcorn
When Garrett’s popcorn opened in Kuala Lumpur, people were somehow attracted to the idea of paying almost RM20 for popcorn cooked in thoughtfully-sourced ingredients. If you’ve not been to Garrett’s, the Chicago Mix is the one to try! Garret Popcorn

4. Gourmet Burgers
Forget cheeseburgers in fast food joints. The food trend now begins with thick fresh meat patties cooked to juicy perfect and topped in a selection of gourmet buns. Can we suggest the one with the dark charcoal buns at myburgerlab. 7 Must-Try Burger Joints in Klang Valley

5. Rainbow Cakes
There’s not much to explain about rainbow cakes. On top of them being ridiculously attractive and colorful, they’re still a favorite among cake lovers and lovers of all-things-sweet. Bisou Bake Shop has some tasty ones, so don’t miss out.

6. Flour-less Cookies
Yes, a lot of people thought cookies were impossible to bake without flour, but science has once again left us baffled by it’s capabilities. We’ve attempted to create flour-less cookies, and they were mighty delicious. Check out our recipe here. The trick ..is peanut butter! Gluten-intolerant peers, thank us later.

7. Burger “Bakar”
What’s all this rambling we hear about Burger Bakar in every suburb? There’s no denying that us Malaysians will never really say no to a Ramlee Burger. But what if we take away that patty and replace it with a homemade one and then instead of pan-frying it, we grilled it as if it were a barbeque? We’ll have a double order of that please. Check out Burger Bakar Kaw Kaw for your nearest outlet.
