If you ever noticed how policemen always seemed unproductive from a diet of coffee and donuts, you’ll be surprised to know that it’s actually fuelling their productivity.

The magic of science speaks again and this time, the discovery is that coffee and donuts can enhance your memory. According to Psychology Today, breakfast isn’t totally complete without critical ingredient – sugar. Sugar is considered indispensable, and after sleeping for eight hours, your blood sugar level is bound to go down a long way. Therefore, your brain is bound to push you to feed your body from sugar.

The human brain requires glucose to function normally, and sugar is the closest and easiest form of glucose you can get your hands on. Sugar helps the neurone in your brain the ability to produce energy and to communicate with other neurone, and it can only go so far without until it begins to die. Therefore, as your blood sugar level decreases after your last meal, you start to crave food, particularly something sweet.

It also appears that sugar has more good for the brain than bad effects for the heart. Once inside the brain, sugar produces acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter chemical that helps regulate your mood, attention and control how you move. However, sugar can only run for so long, which explains a sugar rush, and it’s after effects that makes you sluggish and tired. This is where coffee comes to play.

Coffee is filled with caffeine and as we know, caffeine keeps us awake. When the level of sugar starts to run dry,  the coffee acts as the cure for your mental slowing, thus regulating your concentration and attention.

The brain doesn’t only crave the food you want, but it also craves the stuff you need. So, if you feel like it, go get yourself a little donut and a cup of coffee to celebrate.
