I’m not the biggest fan of working out. As early as my school days, I found it exhausting to exercise. I disliked sweating for the most part. I think most 9-year-old girls would hate putting on a training bra and attempt to “shoot some hoops” with their forming bee stings jiggling under their cotton t-shirts. Let’s not forget the excruciating task of squeezing back into our school uniforms with all that sweat and grime. This is why I never enjoyed exercise – it was traumatizing.
Now that I’m a grown woman with the convenience of finding the right attire and facilities to clean myself up after a workout, working-out turned into a chore instead of an actual health routine. I’m also one to give-up after a few months of trying. I did that with yoga, Tae-kwando, and my overpriced gym membership.
I heard about the Zumba craze a few months ago, and that led up to an article about Zumba. It’s definitely an interesting form of workout since I do enjoy dancing. So, I received my invitation to the Fitness First Malaysia Zumba Dance Class for Facebook Fans, and decided to put Zumba to the test.
Also know as the ‘party workout’, Zumba aims to motivate people to have fun during the workout. It’s not about keeping up with the dance moves, but it’s all about feeling good and letting yourself go during the workout. The Fitness First Malaysia Zumba Dance Class did just that. As I would in a dance party, I’d just let loose and dance to the beat without worrying what people thought of me. That’s one of the whole concept of dancing, right?
I will admit that I have this bad body coordination that makes me look like an awkward monkey when I dance, but because the entire atmosphere of the class was so relaxed and focused on having fun, it helped put aside my stress and that self-conscious feeling I get about how weird my butt would looked if it jiggled a little too much.
But knowing that everyone was looking forward to a fun and not how my butt jiggled, the workout session really took the weight off my shoulders. And even if you can’t nail that one move, no one’s going to tell you that your move sucked. The pot of gold is to attain fitness and does it really matter how good you look when you’re trying to achieve that goal?
Well, with Zumba, that’s exactly what it represents! Though I felt extremely sore after the session, I have to admit that I felt a whole lot better about myself. It’s proven that one workout session can help you feel more confident about yourself and your body, and that’s very true. But on top of that benefit, Zumba will tone your body up and you’ll even make a few friends. What more can you ask for?
For my sake, I’m definitely going to pursue as many Zumba workout classes as I can. To be honest, it’s the most fun I’ve ever had in a workout session. And if one of the laziest girl in the world can say that, I don’t see why you won’t enjoy it.
ZUMBA classes are available at all Fitness First clubs.
