Now, we know skincare is extremely personal and it differs for everyone. It’s a known fact that skincare is the canvas that sets your makeup and you can’t expect flawless makeup if your skincare just ain’t right, honey.
These days, skincare is probably the most talked-about topic on every platform possible. We have beauty bloggers on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok sharing multiple skincare tips, but the question is – do the skincare tips actually care for your skin? Well, believe it or not, some of it is just pure bullshit.
Among the turds, here are the three biggest skincare lies circulating online that you’re probably investing your time and money in.
1| No Chemical Skincare
As much as you’d love to incorporate a chemical-free product for your skincare regimen, it really isn’t possible, because they don’t exist. Every skincare product is made with chemicals, so at the end of the day, it all just comes down to one thing – how much is too much?
It’s okay for skincare products to contain chemicals. What you SHOULD avoid are harmful chemicals like parabens, allergens and carcinogens. Now these are the type of chemicals you don’t wanna introduce to your skin.
There are chemicals that are completely safe and are vital elements in a skincare product that works wonders for the skin. No matter how “natural” the skincare product claims to be, there are chemicals infused in them – you just can’t see them. So please remember that there is no such thing as a “chemical-free skincare product” – so stop wasting your time looking for it!
2| 10-Step Skincare
Oh boy, this one has been around for a long time! On the internet, you can’t escape hearing others extol the virtues of using 10 different skincare products for the same purpose. But girls, before you buy another skincare product that you absolutely don’t need, read on.
We know that the K-beauty trend is to have a legit 10-step skincare routine before bed – but how in the world are you going to fit 10 products onto your skin? Are those pores or tanks, gurl?
Hey, if you think it works for you, fine then. By all means, go ahead – but if you see no change to your skin, or it just gets worse, that’s because you don’t really need the 10-step skincare routine! Believe it or not sweetie, you’re skin already knows how to repair itself. You don’t have to tell your skin how to work!
What you need to do, though, is to figure out what extra love and care your skin needs, and to plan a simple and effective skincare routine that is going to change your skin.
Beauty experts claim that simply cleansing your face, applying a serum, lathering on a moisturiser and finishing things off with a sunscreen is good enough. Try it and you’ll love it!
3| Cleansing Brushes To Wash Your Face
Cleansing brushes to wash your face? Really? What’s wrong with your hands, girl?
Cleansing brushes are purported to be able to remove oil and dirt from the skin that normal cleansing (with hands) can’t. Sounds good? Sure, but what most people are unaware of is that the harsh little bristles in the cleansing brushes do more harm than good to your skin.
These harsh bristles, when used regularly on the skin, cause exfoliation to take place. Exfoliation is indeed good for the skin, when done just once or twice a week. You’re headed for disaster if your skin is exfoliated on a DAILY basis.
“Exfoliating too often can cause dryness and disrupt the skin’s lipid barrier,” says a beauty expert, when asked about the Clarisonic face brush.
If you have dry or sensitive skin, using a face brush for regular cleansing will only lead to misery.
So think twice before buying a cleansing brush!
