Whether or not you’re active on social media, you’ve probably taken a selfie or two in your life, because, let’s be honest, we’re all secretly obsessed with ourselves. We’ve all had those days when we just look drop-dead gorgeous, but we just can’t seem to take the perfect selfie! Here – open up your camera app now, because we’re giving you 5 selfie tips that will get you from looking busted to babe!
#Tip 1: Find your angle
There are several things you can do to find your perfect angle. The first thing you should try is figure out whether you look good with your phone upright or horizontal. For many phone cameras, your face shape will change depending on how you turn your phone. For example, when your phone is upright, your face shape will appear longer, but if you tilt your phone (horizontal), your face would appear wider.
Plus, you can also find out which side of your face looks the best by taking photos of both sides of your face, and deciding which one looks best. So depending on your face shape, you can decide which face angle shows your best side!
#Tip 2: The blinking eye method
This one’s tricky, but it works like a charm! Ever taken those selfies where your eyes just look dead/angry/confused? For this trick, all you need to do is blink right before you take a photo. This is because your eyes are at their most natural state, which makes your photo look more natural and candid. So, just blink slowly… and snap!
#Tip 3: Taking photos while recording
Have you ever looked at yourself in your front camera and thought “Hey, I look good today!”, but when you actually take the photo, you just look like crap? Cuz, same. For this, you just need to slide to video mode on your phone and start recording yourself. Try out a couple of poses or switch up the background to see what looks best. If your phone has this function, you could even take photos along the way. Once you’ve recorded your video, just scroll through the video frames to find the perfect ‘selfie’! The best thing about this trick is that you get to capture the exact moment you look stunning!
#Tip 4: Use props
When it comes to selfies, ANYTHING can be a prop. Whether it’s a beer bottle or your cat, props help bring life to your photos. It gives your photo a story to tell, making it more interesting and eye-catching. Plus, for those who don’t know what to do with their hands, props make your poses seem more natural, since you’re actually holding something. So grab something that’s close to you and pose away!
#Tip 5: Lighting
There are two lighting placements that we should avoid: 1. lighting from the top (too many shadows on your face), and 2. backlighting (unclear & pixelated photos). What we do want is natural lighting, preferably front-facing. For this, you can try to stand in front of a big window. If you’re taking photos at night, try to find a warm light that’ll compliment your skin tone and move around the light source until you find what looks best.
