As someone who freakin’ loves receiving and buying flowers, I’m totally stoked that science has discovered that my flower fixation is healthy! As much as flowers are considered the go-to gift when celebrating others’ milestones or visiting old friends – science suggests that buying fresh flowers for ourselves and displaying them at home instills a sense of total relaxation and mindfulness.
That’s not all – research conducted by the American Society For Horticulture Science has revealed that fresh flowers actually have the capacity to ease physical pain and feelings of anxiety. The study, which sought to find out whether or not plants have any therapeutic qualities for surgical patients, divided 90 patients into two rooms, one of which was filled with plants. Interestingly enough, the participants that stayed in the foliage-friendly space showed significantly improved results than those who did not.

Moreover, the results weren’t just physical, with those who stayed in the flower-filled room reporting more positive emotions and higher overall satisfaction than the plant-free patients. So there you have it. Those surrounded by flowers experienced multiple health benefits, including lowering of blood pressure, reduced severity of headaches, anxiety and fatigue, and a reduced heart rate. Hmm, no wonder I love flowers so much – since I have a lot of pain to tolerate here at home…
So ladies and gentlemen, take this as a sign that you need to buy yourselves flowers. In the meantime, send your mom some flowers too, just because she needs more composure.
