The moon is a familiar sight – brightening up dark nights and inspiring poets with its glimmer. However, the upcoming supermoon tonight will be especially “super” since it’s the closest full moon to Earth in 68 years. The moon’s orbit around the Earth is slightly elliptical – sometimes it appears closer or farther away.
The point of which the moon gets closest to the Earth, is called a perigree.According to the National Space Agency (Angkasa), the supermoon will happen at 7.24pm and become full at 9.54pm. The agency’s head of space science research unit, Zahira Mohd Radzi, said it can be viewed from 7.24pm until dusk the next day from any place with good sky visibility.
“It will not happen again for another 18 years,” said Zahira.
Don’t miss the supermoon as it reaches its pinnacle tonight at 9.54 p.m., Malaysian time! The next one’s reappearing in 2034.
