For some of us, dropping by Starbucks for a cuppa isn’t anything to shout about, but for some others, it’s not so simple. People with disabilities may find it a chore to order anything even.
Well, Starbucks is making a huge change by being more inclusive to those who suffer from impaired hearing or are completely deaf by introducing its first ever cafe staffed mostly by deaf employees. It’s also located right here in Bangsar!
The Starbucks outlet in question is the one located in Bangsar Village II. When you step in, you’ll be greeted with the usual Starbucks signage on the wall, but it is accompanied with sign language translation too. This sign language translation can also be found on the employees’ aprons.
They can take your order in sign language, but you can simply order through menu cards, hand gestures or hand-written notes. Instead of calling out your names, you’d have to check the digital board when your beverage is ready to be picked up.
This means that you’ll be writing your name on the menu card, so your names will never be spelt wrongly again!
This initiative by Starbucks was organised in collaboration with The Society of Interpreters for the Deaf (SID), who helped hire, train the hearing-impaired and teach sign language to the hearing employees. This is a world-first for Starbucks, and we’re so happy with this initiative!
Good job, Starbucks! 😀
