Money saving tips at the airport

If you’ve watched the film Up in The Air starring George Clooney who plays frequent flyer Ryan Bingham, you’ll get a glimpse of what really goes on in international airports these days. While we can’t help but feel that his stereotypes of travellers ring true (choose who you queue behind at custom checkpoints!), we feel that sometimes we need little reminders on the little things that we seem to forget bring along no matter how often we fly.

Here are some pointers on how you can breeze through your next flight, be it for business or pleasure:

Ever since the 911 attacks, liquids above 100 ml are not allowed pass airport security. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t bring a bottle with you. It’s important to keep yourself hydrated with with water so that you stay fresh and keep your skin from drying out as well. Keep an empty bottle with you and fill it up with water at a water fountain as you make your way to the departure gates. It’s not worth paying a five ringgit for a bottle of water seriously.

So you’re sitting there in the plane or departure hall minding your own business when all of a sudden the scent of other passengers’ meals drift pass you and you find yourself wishing you booked an inflight meal? Pack some light snacks with you such as sandwiches, power bars, bananas, apples or cereals to fight off those hunger pangs. Then give yourself a big pat on the pack for saving that money which could translate into a nice wholesome meal during your arrival.

Long flights can be emotionally draining but this is when you can finally catch up on reading those books you’ve put off reading due to work. Not only that, flight delays could happen as well so bring along a book or two while you’re on the road. If you prefer e-books to paperbacks, make sure you pack along your chargers and necessary adaptors just in case you run out battery.

We hope these tips help you save money and survive those long flights a little better. Oh, and beware of those tax free goodies, you don’t want to spend your holiday money before you even get to your destination!
