We have absolutely nothing against plaids but seeing plaids from head-to-toe can be quite shocking. We feel the same way with checkered prints, as it reminds us of checkers and we can never imagine them on our daily outfits.
But wait, are those checkered prints and plaid prints we are seeing on Louis Vuitton, Tommy Hilfiger, and Victoria Beckham’s fashion show? It seems like these patterns are making their way to become one of the most conventional patterns right now as designers have gone mad for casual plaids and turned them into elegant pieces. We must say designers definitely did a great job with applying these quirky patterns on the clothing items in a classic stylish and edgy way.
Even though checkered, tartan and plaids look visually similar, these patterns have played their part in making an outfit visually different and recognizable. The plaid shirt trend started in the 1960s, and the Scottish staple was one of the ‘It’ thing in the early 1990s with the strong influence of grunge rock bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam. It has come a long with designers kicking the traditional pattern up a notch and now plaid is one of the most unconventional pattern which is classic and never went out of style.
The trend started with plaid skirts to the classic plaid shirt to the oversized boyfriend shirt. J.W. Anderson inserted the quirky element into his Topshop collection in a fresh and edgy way. Even Burberry and Thom Browne did not hesitate to showoff the plaid trend as Thom Browne’s Spring Summer collection consists of head-to-toe plaid patterns and Burberry is known for its iconic plaid pattern.
As for checkered patterns, it came as no surprise when the 60s fashion trend has filtered its way back onto the runway especially when the trend was continually adopted and reinvented by high fashion designers. Louis Vuitton’s Spring Summer 2013 collection gave us a dramatic yet elegant show with the colour popping collection and checkered pattern. The collection has instantly brought up a craze as celebrities and fashion icons were seen wearing the ultra-stylish checkered board on their daily look.
Hollywood celebs, models, and well known fashionistas have been spotted in this spring trend as well.
