2017 is coming to an end, and besides the usual music and film award presentations, YouTube is also wrapping up for 2017 with the ‘Top 10 Trending Videos of 2017’ and ‘Top 10 Music Videos of 2017’.
To our (and I’m sure, everyone’s) surprise, on the number one spot of YouTube’s ‘Top 10 Trending Videos of 2017’ was a video from Thailand that surpassed Ed Sheeran‘s Carpool Karaoke and “Shape of You” choreography videos.
Featuring a man dressed in a full oyster costume, YouTube’s most trending video of 2017 was a clip from Thailand‘s singing competition show, The Mask Singer. The video that has garnered 183 million views since it was uploaded in June this year shows one of its contestant, Masked Oyster singing to Until We Will Become Dust. Masked Oyster performed a ballad version of the Thai song that eventually turned into a rap which wowed the audience and gained features upon ‘reaction videos’ by YouTubers.
Breaking South Korean singer Psy’s 2013 worldwide success Gangnam Style‘s record for most-viewed video was Wiz Khalifa‘s See You Again, featuring Charlie Puth in July. Unfortunately, the tables turned for See You Again when the international viral Despacito by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee stole their spot a month later and eventually became top one of ‘Top 10 Music Videos 2017’ with 4.4 billion views.
