Scrolling through TikTok for hours on end, you may discover a few makeup tips along the way. Some may work, others are just too good to be true, while others are a bit too bizarre to even attempt. However, there is one makeup tip that even experienced makeup artists recommend because they’ve been doing it for decades: underpainting.
Underpainting is essentially starting your makeup with contour, blush and highlight, then layering your foundation on top. With this technique, what you’re aiming for is having your makeup look more natural, with softer shadows and flushed cheeks that come out from within. The glow, the flush and the sculpt on the cheeks and jaw look completely natural when you use them as a foundation prior to your foundation. Although some may think that it’s a bit too much makeup to handle, you can always opt for fewer products to apply to your face. In fact, you can just use your blush to get that naturally-flushed look and layer on top of that with a tinted foundation.

With this technique as well, when you apply the powdered blush on top, you won’t even have to bother with doing touch ups. The cream blush pigment from the bottom will still come through and show colour on your cheeks even by the end of the day. Regardless of how (or if) you wish to apply base before your foundation, touching up shouldn’t be a hassle for you.
Also, layering foundation on top doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t apply powdered contour, blush and highlight – unless you use a tinted foundation. The goal of underpainting here is to make it seem as if the “look” is part of you, that the soft and flushed features are from within. All in all, underpainting isn’t as scary as other makeup hacks we’ve seen on TikTok. With some practice and blending, you’ll get that glow from within in no time.
