Practical wear for nursing mothers

Fashion may not be top priority when you’re a new mother. In fact, the only accessory you’d bother toting around proudly is your newborn child. However you’d soon realize that with breastfeeding as part of your routine, you’ll find most of your current wardrobe unsuitable for breastfeeding especially in public. Nursing clothes need to comfortable and discreet with easy access for the baby. There are many types of breastfeeding clothes for all occasions from bras to nursing shirts, nightwear to dresses.

We women think that nursing attire shouldn’t scream aloud “I’m breastfeeding!”, instead they should be versatile, comfortable and wearable which can be worn long after your pregnancy period.

Nursing tops

A nursing shirt is a top made with double layers which you can lift to allow your baby to feed while protecting your modesty at the same time. This design can be found in many nursing blouses or dresses.

Nursing bras

Remember that your breasts will get fuller as your pregnancy extends towards the ninth month so only buy your nursing bra around your 36th week. Don’t be afraid to get a bra that’s one size bigger as your breasts will continue to grow as you start lactating. You’ll also find the extra space useful for breast pads to soak up any milk leakage. Try to have a few bras because chances are you will leak often (you can’t control these things!) and they’ll end up in the laundry quite frequently.

Nursing pads

There are three important wardrobe components when it comes to breastfeeding: nursing tops, nursing bras and nursing pads. Nursing pads are designed to absorb or stop the flow of breast milk when you’re not feeding. This is because some women have strong let down reflexes as soon as they hear their child crying.

You can purchase these items from stores selling maternity clothing but for more variety, try shopping online but make sure they have a return policy just in case the item is too small or large for you. Choose a design that is practical for both you and you baby.

Here are some local sites you can check for Kasihku Sayangku, Mamma House, Just Mum, My Lovely Closet, Autumnz and MotherClub
