Hong Kong: A Muslim-friendly Tourist Destination

Hong Kong, a destination that’s known for its cosmopolitan inhabitants, Chinese cuisines and shopping opportunities, has recently co-hosted a Hong Kong Muslim Workshop to create a bigger awareness among potential Muslim tourists about the city’s Muslim-friendly attractions.

With an estimated 220,000 Muslims living in Hong Kong, Muslim tourists can be assured of religious facilities and a number of Halal restaurants scattered throughout the city. Mufti Haji Muhammad Arshad, the Chief Imam of Hong Kong and Chief Imam of Kowloon Mosque, one of the presenters  during the Hong Kong Muslim Workshop, says, “Amongst the amenities and attractions catered to Muslim visitors are Hong Kong’s major mosques and there are also restaurants throughout the city which serve Halal cuisine such as Indian, Pakistani, Middle Eastern, Western and Chinese.”

These places are just some of the highlights for Hong Kong-bound Muslim tourists:

Masjid Jamia, the oldest mosque in Hong Kong, welcomes hundreds of devout Muslims every Friday for weekly prayers. This mosque also conducts Quran recital and religious class for children alost every evening. 30, Shelley Street, Central.

Masjid Kowloon is situated just beside Tsim Sha Tsui MTR, and is a well-known building in Hong Kong because of its imposing minarets.  It contains four floors in which religious classes are held. 105, Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.

The Islamic Centre Canteen is located on the fifth level of the Masjid Ammar & Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre. Visitors can try various mouth-watering dim sum dishes in this Halal restaurant, such as siu mai, prawn dumplings and popular Cantonese desserts. 5/F, Masjid Ammar & Osman Ramju Sadick Islamic Centre, 40 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai.

Jashan (which means ‘celebration’) restaurant offers quality Indian dishes, such as the Malabari fish curry, Sandal Wood Chicken, chicken or lamb kebab and pulao rice. 7/F, 1 Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon.

All Halal restaurants in Hong Kong display the Halal Certificates issues by the Incorporated Trustees of Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong.
