The seven-time Formula One (F1) champion, Michael Schumacher is in a coma after undergoing brain surgery on Sunday for head injuries that occurred during his skiing trip with his son in the French Alps.
According to the Grenoble University Hospital Center, the retired F1 driver was sent to the clinic in a coma and he underwent immediate surgery. The hospital said the 44-year-old Schumacher “was suffering a serious brain trauma with coma upon his arrival, which required an immediate neurosurgical operation.”
It is unknown whether or not Schumacher is still in a coma but a statement signed by a neurosurgeon, anaesthesiologist and Marc Penaud, the hospital’s deputy director confirms that “He still remains in a critical condition.”
It is learnt that Schumacher was on a skiing trip with his 14-year-old son and he fell, hitting his head on a rock while skiing off-piste in Maribel early Sunday. The resort managers said he was wearing a helmet and was still conscious when the rescuers arrived at the scene.
But his condition had gotten worse while he was waiting for orthopedic and trauma surgeon, Gerard Saillant to travel from Paris to the hospital in Grenoble to examine Schumacher.
The news gained international attention and F1 drivers turned to social media to wish Schumacher a quick recovery.
